Curriculum and Accompanying Children's Book to Teach Kids About Bullying, Discrimination, Dog Safety, Humane Treatment of Animals & Responsibility

Wagtown's K-1 Curriculum was created in partnership with PBS and built to national education standards. This set of lessons is a fun way to teach kids about dog safety, responsible dog ownership, self-esteem, unconditional love, and all about the wonders of dogs.

Wagtown’s dog ownership education materials for kids have been tested with public and private schools, daycare centers, homeschoolers, and animal advocates across the country.

The formative years of early learning are a critical time to introduce humane behavior modeling. Our primary focus is on educating children and their families about responsible pet ownership and safety around dogs. Just as recycling curriculum was heavily used during the green initiatives in our country to influence positive attitudes about caring for the Earth, our hope is that the Wagtown K-1 Curriculum will start conversations both in classrooms and in family rooms about these key topics.

Dayton, Ohio is now on the national map for dog friendliness. Wagtown, Inc. has been awarded a $20,000 grant for the Wagtown K-1 curriculum and Wagtown children’s book by the Mars Corporation’s BETTER CITIES FOR PETS program through the United States Conference of Mayors.
Leaders in Dayton have high hopes for the program. “I believe in the power of teaching young children important life lessons while sharpening their minds. Our strides toward dog-friendliness will be paired with responsible and proactive communication and outreach. This program allows us to affect the health and safety of our region starting at early ages. We’re excited to get the Wagtown K-1 curriculum into the hands of teachers and the ideas into little minds,” said Mayor Nan Whaley.
According to Miller, young children are most at risk for bites. This program addresses ways to stay safe around dogs – and ways to keep your dog safe. “Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery· County, through our Creating Healthy Communities Program, is committed to partnering with Wagtown for a K-1 Curriculum to promote dog safety and responsible dog ownership in all schools in Montgomery County.

“The curriculum understands the fundamental theories of learning, humane education, and how to relate to children. We feel the curriculum would be a good fit for both social-emotional and literacy content on PBS Learning Media. Teachers are going to love this!” according to Greg Schell, PBS.
“The K-1 packet is hopefully the first of many so that we can encourage discussions and messaging about humane treatment and responsible ownership practices as children get older and take on more “dog parenting” roles,” explained Miller.” The support and recognition for Dayton as an officially designated BETTER CITIES FOR PETS winner is a testament to the strides being made in Dayton for dogs, their families, and their community.

Dayton awards mini-grant dollars to local nonprofit to build Wagtown Dog Trail in downtown Dayton.

July 8, 2019 – Dayton, OH —Wagtown, Inc. has been awarded a $5,000 mini grant from the City of Dayton to begin building the nation’s first Wagtown Dog Trail with Wagtown Barking Spots. “The City of Dayton has awarded more than $600,000 to neighborhood groups and associations through the Neighborhood Mini-Grant Program. Grant recipients are awarded a maximum of $5,000 for physical improvements, marketing materials, community events, and other initiatives that benefit the community and increase organizational capacity. Recipients are required to use the grant to leverage a fifty percent match from other funding sources and in-kind contributions,” according to the city’s website.
The Wagtown Dog Trail is a two-mile, dog-friendly tour connecting Webster Station and The Oregon District. Wagtown Dog Trails are dog-friendly spaces to get out and walk, meet other dogs, get info on local dog-friendly events, hold programs, and more. Dog Trails increase community walkability for pedestrians (both bipedal and quadrupedal), foster social experiences, encourage healthy lifestyles, deter crime, and provide a forum to demonstrate responsible dog ownership.

Along the Wagtown Dog Trail, pooch-toting residents and visitors will be able to see Wagtown Barking Spots. These artistic installations showcase local creative talent and celebrate the community’s love of dogs. Wagtown Barking Spots will give dog lovers easy access to poop bags, resting places, and spaces to chill and connect to what’s happening for dogs and their humans in Dayton.

As a member of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan Advisory Committee, I had the privilege of contributing to one of Dayton’s most ambitious and transformative initiatives. Launched in 2010, the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan represented a bold vision to revitalize the heart of Dayton, encompassing economic development, housing, sustainability, arts, entertainment, and infrastructure. My role on the Advisory Committee was focused on providing strategic marketing and leadership insights to advance the plan’s objectives. This work included fostering public and private partnerships, developing innovative strategies to attract investment, and promoting downtown as a vibrant hub for business, culture, and recreation. The plan’s success was evident in over $400 million of public and private investment in the downtown area, with another $200 million in the pipeline. Efforts such as the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, expansion of housing options, the activation of street-level spaces, and enhancements to the riverfront have made downtown Dayton a model for urban renewal. Through this collaboration, I supported initiatives that align with my expertise in creating sustainable, community-focused growth. Serving on this committee allowed me to collaborate with leaders across industries, leveraging my marketing expertise to drive economic vibrancy and community engagement. The Greater Downtown Dayton Plan is more than a roadmap—it is a testament to the power of collective vision and effort in shaping a city’s future.
